Bone and Joint Specialists Physical Therapy is one of the few therapy offices in Winchester, Virginia to offer Blood Flow Restriction Training.

Also known as Occlusion Training or BFR Training, this therapeutic exercise allows us to work your muscles while protecting injuries and surgical repairs.

By working with light weights and low-pressure cuffs, we can simulate a heavy workout.  This can prevent the atrophy that often follows surgery and immobilization. And we can start to rebuild strength much earlier, more safely.

Electrical stim, also known as E-stim, is a type of physical therapy that uses electrical current to stimulate the muscles. This treatment can help improve muscle strength, movement, and function.

E-stim is often used to treat conditions such as spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and stroke. It can also be helpful for people who are recovering from surgery or an injury.

There are several different ways to administer E-stim. One common method is to use electrodes that are placed on the skin over the target muscles. The electrical current will then pass through the electrodes and stimulate the muscles.

Another way to administer E-stim is with a TENS unit. A TENS unit is a small device that passes a gentle current through electrodes on the skin.  It causes a prickly tingling sensation and helps to reduce pain and reduce muscles spasticity.

People who are interested in trying E-stim should talk to their doctor or physical therapist for more information. They will work with the patient to determine which type of electrical stim is best based on their condition, treatment goals, and lifestyle.

For example, some people may use portable TENS units to help control chronic pain because it’s small enough to keep in your pocket or clips onto your belt. This device produces only gentle currents so there are no negative side effects.

On the other hand, if you need to increase muscle strength this may not be the best option since it only emits low-level current. In this case, electrodes applied directly to the skin would be recommended and used over targeted muscles for 15–20 minutes every day.

Larger E-Stim machines are often used in the therapy office at Bone and Joint Specialists of Winchester to help increase muscle strength, movement and function after surgery or injuries.

Many people assume that therapy is only needed after something terrible has happened, or as a last resort.

However, this couldn’t be further from the truth: therapy should be seen as just as much a part of your life as brushing your teeth and going to work.

Many people do not go for therapy simply because they don’t know how it can help them, or think that it’s too expensive, or too difficult to manage with their busy schedules. But like brushing your teeth and going to work (which I’m sure you’d agree are important), there are plenty of ways to incorporate therapy into your daily routine; namely practicing self-care at home.

Self-care at home needs to take many forms – whether it’s taking 30 minutes out of your schedule to do your therapy or going for a walk in the park, anything that promotes your own physical and mental well-being is an important part of self-care.

While there are many physical therapy treatments that require the personal care of a therapist, you will also get “homework” to do on your own to help continue the healing.

But therapy can require some special equipment. Don’t worry though. Rather than searching the internet, many specialty equipment items can be purchased from the home therapy shop at Bone and Joint Specialists Physical Therapy after your session.

Did you know you can use a prescription from any doctor at Bone and Joint Specialists of Winchester Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy department?

It’s true!  If you have a prescription for physical therapy from urgent care centers or your primary care provider you are welcome to do your therapy with us.

We accept prescriptions from any physician, PA, or nurse practitioner.  Weather you have a sprained ankle, a sore shoulder, or an injured knee we are happy to help!

Our therapists specialize in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and know they best ways to get you moving again.

Physical therapy is an important part of recovery after orthopedic surgery.

Orthopedic surgeons are very good at what they do, but the final results of the total process are only as good as each individual’s commitment to work hard during physical therapy—even if it hurts.

Surgeons usually have their patients get started on simple exercises immediately following surgery; this helps prevent blood clots and allows the surgical site to heal faster because it keeps swelling down and facilitates better range-of-motion (ROM).

But they don’t strengthen muscles and improve strength and stability around the joint in question. That begins when you start formal physical therapy.

You can always do your therapy at a location close to home. But if you live near our office, our therapists specialize in the care and rehabilitation of orthopedic patients. They can prescribe home exercises to speed your recovery. And they can talk with your surgeon immediately if they have any concerns about your progress!

Besides its clinical value for you, our therapists enjoy helping patients recover quickly and completely. Their work is their hobby—and they love it!

They will teach you how to regain strength and ROM as efficiently as possible using safe techniques with proper form so that you don’t do more harm than good.

Physical Therapy

It’s more than just exercise! We start from the ground up, teaching your body to move properly.  After all, you can’t heal by simply doing more of what got you injured in the first place!  By starting with mobility and stability before moving on to strength and conditioning, we lay the groundwork for a speedy recovery through our individualized treatment plans.

Recovery and Reconditioning

As you or your loved ones recover from illnesses and conditions, you may be left with varying levels of deconditioning and weakness.  We can help.
