The doctors at Bone and Joint Specialists perform many procedures under local anesthesia.  There are many advantages to having procedures performed in our office.

• You are able to eat before your procedure.
• In many cases, you may drive yourself to and from the office.
•  Preoperative testing is not required prior to your procedure.
•  Typically, you will be in the office for only 30-45 minutes.
•  There is no need to start an IV or administer sedation or any other intravenous medications.
• After your procedure, there is no nausea or grogginess that can sometimes happen with sedation or general anesthesia.
• The cost of your procedure is considerably less compared to surgery at the hospital or outpatient surgery center.

BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE

• You may eat and drink before your procedure as you usually do.  You do not need to adjust your diet or miss any meals.
• You may take all medications as regularly scheduled.
• No preoperative testing or clearance is needed prior to your procedure.

DURING YOUR PROCEDURE

• To begin, your doctor will place local anesthetic around the procedure site.  This causes only minor discomfort.  The anesthetized area may become pale as the medicine takes effect.  Once the area is numb, you will be brought back to the procedure suite.  We will not start an IV.
• You will be fully awake and aware during the procedure.  You will be positioned comfortably in a chair, or your may fully lie down if you prefer.
• You do not have to watch the procedure if you do not want to.  You can bring headphones if you like or you can tell us what type of music you prefer.  You may even watch a video on your phone or look out the window.
• You may feel some movement and pressure during your procedure, but you will not feel pain.  If needed, more anesthetic can be placed.
• After your procedure, a light dressing will be placed.  Keep this dressing on, clean and dry for four days.  After four days, you may remove the dressing, get the wound gently soapy wet in the shower and place a smaller dressing or band-aid on the wound.

AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE

• After small procedures, you may be able to drive yourself home.  Occasionally it is better to have someone drive you.
• The local anesthetic usually wears off in 6-8 hours.  We recommend you take pain medication before the anesthetic fully wears off.
• Most patients require only over-the-counter pain medicatins after their procedure, such as Tylenol or Motrin, or these two medications taken in combination.  It is safe and helpful to take Tylenol and Motrin together, unless you are allergic or intolerant to one or both of them.  Some  patients may require a small prescription for a mild narcotic medication.
• Do not hesitate to reach out to the office after your procedure if you have any questions or concerns.

Bone & Joint Specialists of Winchester is proud to announce that beginning August 24, 2020, we will be offering Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections.  Dr. Larson will be providing this service to our patients.  We will be offering Affordable Autologous PRP Healing, Customized Autologous PRP Healing, and Amniotic Fluid Injections.  Affordable PRP only uses your own blood to extract growth factors and inject it back into the area.  It is best suited for knees and other joints.  Customized PRP is focused on your exact treatment area and is used to treat all joint and soft tissue problem areas.  Finally, we will be offering Amniotic Fluid Injections.  This will be pure amniotic fluid from screened donors.  It is suited for all soft tissue and wound care treatments and contains 100x more growth factor concentration than blood and is an option for patients contraindicated for blood or bone marrow withdrawal, cancer, blood disorders or infection.

Bone & Joint Specialists of Winchester’s Rehab Services department is pleased to announce that beginning the week of August 3, 2020, we will be offering “Walk In” consultations.  These consultations will be performed by our therapists without the need of a physician’s referral.  This will provide a more direct route to treatment and get you in quickly to be assessed by our staff.  These consultations are ideal for general acute or chronic injuries that would benefit from an exercise routine to be performed at home.  If after this session the problem continues to be unresolved, then we can recommend a follow-up with one of our excellent providers for further orthopaedic assessment.  The designated walk-in hours will be every Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM.  The consultations will be on a first come, first served basis.  These visits will be paid for by the patient day of service.  Following your visit, we will bill the insurance company on your behalf.  We are looking forward to adding this service to better meet your needs on your road to recovery.

Our very own Dr. Larson has been the first orthopaedic surgeon in the area to perform a Stemless Total Shoulder on a patient.  The procedure requires less time and blood loss for the patient.  The physician is able to attach the device to the patient’s own bone and does not require the long stem needed for a standard shoulder repair.
