James W. Larson, III, M.D.

Dr. Larson specializes in sports injuries and arthroscopy surgery. His goal is to get people healed quickly, through minimally invasive techniques. He wants to help you get back on the court or into the gym as quickly as possible. He holds a Level 1 CrossFit coaching certificate and lifts regularly.  He runs a website dedicated to healthy weight training and fitness throughout the lifespan. Surgical Specialization:

Dr. James Larson's main focus is on surgical and nonsurgical management of shoulder injuries and disorders. He is an expert in the treatment of injuries to all major joints as well as major and minor athletic injuries. His fellowship training is in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery and he holds a CAQ in this subspeciality from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

He has co-authored a study on cutting-edge meniscus repair techniques. He is also a consultant for Smith and Nephew, and helps to educate other orthopedic surgeons about new meniscal repair techniques.

Career:

Dr. Larson joined Bone and Joint Specialists in 2010.  He has been the chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Winchester Medical Center for several years. He has also chaired the Orthopedic Oversight Committee for all of Valley Health. He has also been the Medical Director for the Department of Athletic Training at Shenandoah University.

Training:

He has been trained at two of the top orthopedic programs in the country: The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and The Hughston Clinic in Columbus, GA.  During his training, he helped to care for athletes from all walks of life: from weekend warriors to Olympians, Pittsburgh Panthers, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hobbies:

His hobbies include weight training, fly fishing, and playing volleyball. He is an Eagle Scout and serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster for his sons' Scout troops. His lovely and patient wife raises their three sons, holds a Masters's Degree in Sports Psychology, and coaches Volleyball for both John Handley High School and the Blue Ridge Volleyball Association.
